A dash up to North Wales for what we hoped would be the sunny day of the bank holiday weekend. It remained dry, but conditions were otherwise challenging! Clag locked down over the crag meaning no views and humid, still air making it a highly uncomfortable midge fest on the belay ledges.

When midges attack

We persevered none the less, but switched objectives from Outside Edge (V.Diff***) to Ordinary Route (Diff**).

The guidebook describes the latter as 'a climb that can be attempted in all conditions by the competent'. OK, we thought, that includes us :-) Another party did Outside Edge and found the third pitch very wet, so we felt we'd made a wise choice. The classic 3 star route will still be there next time when we visit.

Before going back, however, we'll wait for a guarantee of sunshine and midge free conditions. All in all, pleased to have made the effort and got a climb in over an unpromising weekend.

Route: Ordinary Route (Diff**) - P1, P3 for me; P2, P4 for JC

Cwm Silyn, we'll be back.
